Isabel’s case reminds us of how fortunate we are to have access to medical care at an early age. She was born with hypothyroidism. Without normal levels of thyroid hormone, a child cannot grow or develop normally. Unfortunately for Isabel, this was not discovered until she was 6 years old. By then, she had already suffered significant brain damage.
The RVF helps her family pay for her medicine, for trips to the endocrinologist and for tuition to attend a special school. Isabel is doing well now and loves to go to school. She is slowly learning how to read and write, but we hope to see her progress enough so that she can someday be independent and be able to provide for her own needs.
